A View from the Causeway at the End of the World

One of my favourite spots in Scotland is to be found right on the very northern coast of the mainland just west of the village of Tongue, in Sutherland.

Spanning the Kyle of Tongue is the Tongue Causeway that links the east and west parts of Sutherland. Beyond the Kyle, to the north, there is nothing apart from the Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands to the north-east and to the north-west next stop the Faroe Islands!

There are a couple of car parks on the causeway which allow a visitor to stop and take in the breathtaking view south, over the waters of the Kyle, to the distinctive rocky shape of Ben Loyal (a fine Corbett) to the south-east and the whaleback form of Ben Hope (the most northerly Munro) to the south-west.

It is a great spot to take a pause and soak in the majestic vista with a faint breeze or the calls of passing birds the only sound to be heard (passing traffic allowing).

The road that works its way west from here also has its fair share of jaw-dropping, if bleak, beauty, such as the more narrow view of Ben Hope with Loch Hope at it's side or the view south-west over Loch Eribol to the shattered mass of ridges and crags that is Foinaven.
